Park your Resistances

Neuroscience, psychology and the social sciences are continually confirming that we can change how we feel, think and act in a short period of time.

This is a dynamic time to be alive, with abundant choices, opportunities, information and expertise at our finger tips, and yet, still many of our questions go by unanswered.  The increase in those suffering with depression, broken families, homelessness or simply being confused, directionless, purposeless are evident in every day interactions.

What can we do, to show up more fully, be empowered and make chooses that work for both our individual good and the greater good?

Social psychologist Amy Cuddy gave a ground-breaking TED talk in 2012. She said our nonverbal thoughts feelings and physiology govern not only how other people see us but how we see ourselves.  Our body stance effects our mood and confidence.

Amy said “…we smile when we feel happy, but also, when we’re forced to smile by holding a pen in our teeth…it(then)makes us feel happy…”

Think of it like this, if you act as if you already have what you want, then you are creating the conditions for the realisation of that want.  A practiced smile makes us feel happy even when we were not happy before the practice.

So, we can change our experiences, we can change how we show up by changing aspects of ourselves and this does not have to be some arduous therapy, it can be a simply practice.

Let’s have a look at a Power Statements which helps you to choose deliberately which characteristics will best serve you in a particular moment by trying on the identity of someone we admire.

Power Statements goes like this:

How would

…….(fill in the blank)……..

feel, think and act, in this moment?

THEN DO THAT.

For example:

How would

.. . Richard Branson / Amy Cuddle / Tony Robbins / Aunty May….

Feel think and act in this moment?

THEN DO THAT.

How would a

confident speaker /  inspirational leader / great decision maker

feel think and act in  this moment?

THEN DO THAT.

What makes a Power Statement so powerful is its ability to create a distance between our resistances (what holds us back) outdated beliefs, long winded stories and un-resourceful habits….and…. our potential (the new identity).

Think of it like this

Neuroscience has validated what ancient wisdom traditions have known for thousands of years. We have complex, adaptive and functional neural networks or more commonly known as brains in out heart and gut regions.

So, when you ask your self

… how your identity will fee,l you are checking in with you own heart intelligence for the intuitive answer

… when you ask how your identity would think, you are asking your head brain for innate creativity to find a solution.

…when you ask how your identity would act you are asking your gut intelligence for motivated action.

When you try on how your identity feels, thinks, and acts, you experience a new reality from your higher intelligence. How they think and how they act. Your experience is transformed. TRY IT!

With practice and regular practice of Power Statements you morph from trying to being.

Power Statements are a simple tool that transforms un-resourceful states into resourceful states.
